Goodbye Long Locks!

I have been told that I will lose my hair. My oncologist said that I would probably want to cut my hair shorter because when it falls out it will come out in chunks. He said that I would probably wake up one morning with a halo of hair on my pillow. Yuck!!! So off comes my hair.

As many of you know I have always had long hair. The last time my hair was short was when Jett was born. I think I cut it to my shoulders. I am not a brave person so I just kept the same hairstyle.

On Wednesday my sister and I went to get my long locks cut. It was great having her there for support!! We picked out several styles each shorter then the first. The hairdresser did a great job! I now have a very short haircut. Everyone at the shop thought the cut looked great. My husband (who I thought would hate the short hair) couldn’t stop raving about it and said I should have done this years ago. I even might keep this hairstyle after my hair comes back.

This weekend I felt really good. I don’t know if it will get worse but they say your “low point” is 5-7 days after your chemo. After that it is uphill until your next treatment. Of course I don’t follow what is expected. The only side effects that I have is extreme pain in my back when I sit or lay. It actually feels better if I stand or walk around. When I sit I feel as if there is an electrical shock running up and down my back. It will actually throb pain.

My dad came up this weekend to visit. It was nice to see him and spend time with him. I know my mom really enjoyed having him here. He brought his juicer with him. Yeah!! He made me a “wonderful” drink- 3 carrots, 1 beet, 1 celery, and 1 apple. It tastes like leaves. Yummy!! (To bad you can’t see that I am actually having one right now and trying not to gag!!)

  1. Shelly,
I have actually had that drink! My friend, Susan, wanted me to try it. It really wasn’t too bad. Ofcourse, I would rather have a chocolate milkshake:)
I think you absolutely smashing with your new haircut.
Uncle Dave is talking with Grandma Dolly right now. I told her I was writing on your blog.

It’s awesome to see you so positive and retaining a sense of humor 😉 I’ll have to get your dad to make one of those drinks for us here at Zeon – I’ve never had leaves so I can’t wait!!

Your hair cut looks really good. I bet you were glad to see your dad and I am sure your mom was happy to see him also. Sorry to hear you are having pain in your back, hopefully the treatment will take care of the pain. It is good that you have a positive outlook. Kaylee looks cute too.

I remember you with short hair in grade school. I can’t think of any memories with your longer hair. Looking good.

  8. Michelle,
Discovered your blog today, and I’m learning so much more about you as I read your writing and the replies from those who love you! Great that you’re feeling well enough to walk daily and eat well; I remember you always being wellness-centered.

Your cut is cute; I have some hats for you and will drop them off on your doorstep soon, if that’s alright w/ you. Don’t want to intrude…you’re blessed to have your mom there for support.

  13. Hi Shelly –

I don’t know if you remember me…we were counseling partners for a psych class at SAU. I went to church with Jennifer for the longest and didn’t realize that you were her sister. I just wanted to let you know that I’m praying for you and your soon remission from this horrible disease. Your children are precious! Keep the faith!

  14. Hi Dear Shelly,

I’m so thankful that you are feeling stronger. As you know Papa’s and my prayers are ascending up to the Heavenly Father constantly. You know it tells us in the Bible to pray without ceasing. Your new wig will fit the bill. Give my little Jett, Abby and Kaylee hugs and kisses for me. I’ve been looking for new recipes for you, but haven’t come up with any yet.
Shelly, keep looking up and keep faith. We love you,
    Grandma and Papa
